What is Job Security?

Spending the best part of your working life in an office, factory, or retail job with the security of redundancy if anything goes wrong. Plus aWhat-Is-Job-Security nice pension when you get to retirement age is what most people would have believed without given a second thought to 'what is job security'?

That is until you find yourself in the deepest, darkest realms of the unknown when the company that you have worked for the past 28 years goes under leaving all its staff facing an unemployed, uncertain future.

Exactly what happened to my sister recently who has spent the past 28 years as a manager for a famous British high street retailer that now has no future view it.

Not only is her future unclear but due to the way in which the company imploded she will receive a reduced redundancy payoff, an unknown but most certainly reduced pension when she comes to retire, and all of this will need the supporting shoulder of the British taxpayer to make it happen.

What is Wrong With This Scenario?

Nothing! That is if you are the owner of the company. However, if you are one of the 11,000, then there is a whole host of problems that must be faced.

  • Where do I go for a new job
  • Will I need to retrain
  • Who will want to employ me at my age
  • All I have ever known is this job
  • I feel so far out of my comfort zone
  • How much redundancy will I receive
  • How much will my pension be worth now

The list of problems to be faced could go on, but it will not get us anywhere nor will it solve the problems of the soon to be unemployed staff!

Positive thoughts from a new perspective.

If my sister, along with the rest of the staff, were to wallow in self-pity and not venture outside of their comfort zones then I am quite confident that they will not be able to elevate their thoughts from the situation that they all find themselves.

If on the other hand after being dealt such a terrible blow, they could spend some time going through how it might be possible to change the situation around from negative to positive.

Chose to think more about how they could take greater control of their individual employment and salaries; they may just find out in themselves exactly want they have desired to do all along with their working lives!

My sister as much as she is angry at the situation has chosen a much more positive thought. One that doesn't involve dwelling on the past or wishing and hoping that things had turned out differently.

No, she has looked at what she is passionate about and how she could turn it into a job or even better, a business.

The new perspective

Ok, let us take a longer look at what my sister loves doing in her spare time, what she is passionate about, what she loves doing, the thing that makes time fly because she enjoys it so much.

Baking…..You mean baking cakes? Yes, exactly that. When she starts out prepping up the kitchen and weighing out all the ingredients, she will just drift off into a world of her own.

Now up until the collapse of the company that she works for, we had never discussed turning her passion/pastime into any business but, when you look at how much fun she has baking and the years that she has spent perfecting her skill. It seems mad not to try it out as a business.

However, This is Only One Person in Eleven Thousand!One-In-Thousands

Quite right! What if the other 10,999 staff members were to look at what they like to do in their spare time, the list might look something like this:

  • Golf
  • Gardening
  • Sewing
  • Cooking
  • Painting
  • Sailing
  • Cycling
  • DIY
  • Model making
  • Travelling
  • Winemaking
  • Brewing Beer
  • Climbing
  • Hiking
  • Camping
  • Etc…….

Now this list is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to people's interests, and passions and each and every one of these could become an individual niche business.

Is it Easy to Turn These Passion/Interests into a business?

I would not say that it was easy to turn these interests into a business. However, I would not say that it was impossible or even difficult! Moreover, with the correct training, it will be a whole lot easier than trying to set it up on your own.

To achieve anything worthwhile you will need to learn new skills and keep upgrading them as you build the business up.

The Captain of Your ShipBecome-Ship-Captain

By building your business, you take control of the ship. You steer it in the direction that you want it to go. Not sailing blindly along to stormy waters in the controlling hands of someone that does not care what happens to the ship or the crew on board.

You will be able to control:

  • The hours you work
  • The salary you want to earn
  • How much money to reinvest
  • How much money to invest in a pension
  • What you want the business to be about
  • When you want to take a holiday
  • Get paid for any overtime you work
  • Work with people you choose

Think about being able to do all this from home and no more travelling to and from work.

All this you can achieve when you accept your situation:

  • Understand that it was not your fault
  • Step out from your comfort zone
  • Forget the fear of change, embrace it
  • Know that you can learn new skills and knowledge
  • Understand you will make mistakes, and they will then lead you in the right direction
  • Smile and enjoy yourself

We both spoke about the types of jobs out there for men and women; contract employment, zero hour contracts, part time jobs and even full-time jobs.

When you think about it, there is no such thing as job security when you look into how companies can just fall apart. So with that in mind why not set up your niche business in something you love doing and build it up to your comfortable level. Learn to be the Captain, that way you react to your situation through choice by managing your thoughts and reactions.

So my sister took control of her thoughts and refused to allow them to be ones of doubt and despair. The kind of thoughts successful people refuse to allow into their minds.

When we both chatted about her options, it helped to lighten the mood. It gave her a greater understanding that if she kept dwelling on the bad situation, her mind would then keep her trapped in that way of thinking. We laughed and we joked and then my sister in a much more relaxed frame of mind was able to come up with plenty of new and good ideas for her future.

In going through this process of discussion, she was able to realise what she Loves to do, where she can acquire the skills and knowledge to build a passion business and understand that it will not happen overnight, as so many online programs of wealth will have you believe.
